You probably heard about the Iran deal signing in Switzerland today. Big headline. But while that was happening, something else rolled on in the background — the same way it does every single day. The U.S. Treasury wrote checks for nearly $3 billion... just in interest... on money the government already spent.

That adds up to over $1 trillion a year. Look at the chart. In 2015, annual interest on the national debt was $223 billion. That felt big at the time. Today it’s nearly five times that. And here’s the part that really gets me — nobody votes on it. Congress doesn’t appropriate it. It just goes out the door, automatically, every morning.

Most people think defense is the big line item. It used to be. Not anymore. Net interest payments now exceed what we spend on the entire military — every soldier, every aircraft carrier, every base on the planet. Think about that. The fastest-growing item in the federal budget isn’t a program. It’s a bill for past spending.

Now... why did it jump so fast? Two things. First, the debt itself grew by nearly $11 trillion in just five years — COVID spending, the Iran conflict, and deficits that never got reined in. Second, the Fed pushed rates up from near zero to over 3.5%, which means all that rolling debt refinances at much higher rates. Those two forces together turned a manageable interest bill into the third-largest line item in the budget — trailing only Social Security and Medicare.

Here’s what most people get wrong. They assume a peace deal or spending cuts will fix this. They won’t — not fast enough. Even if Washington balanced the budget tomorrow, we’d still owe interest on $39 trillion in existing debt. At current rates, that’s a trillion-dollar annual bill for years to come. The CBO projects $2.1 trillion a year in interest by 2036.

What does that mean for you? It means the government has less room to cut your taxes, less room to fund Social Security without changes, and every reason to keep inflation running a little hot — because inflation shrinks the real value of that debt. If you’re retired or close to it, that last part matters a lot.
