The Social Security Trustees released their 2026 report last month. The media ran the usual headlines. “Trust fund in trouble.” “Congress must act.” You’ve heard it a hundred times.

But this year, one number should stop you cold.

The OASI retirement trust fund — the one that writes your monthly check — peaked at $2.8 trillion back in 2017. For about a decade, interest income covered the gap between what came in and what went out. The balance held steady. Looked fine on paper.

Now look at the chart. By the end of 2025, reserves had dropped to $2.3 trillion. That’s a $200 billion decline in a single year. The year before that? $100 billion. The year before that? $70 billion. The bleed isn’t slowing down. It’s speeding up.

Most people assume Congress will fix this before anything bad happens. Maybe they will. But Congress has known about this math since the mid-1990s. Thirty years of reports... thirty years of nothing.

And here’s the part that really gets me. When the fund hits zero — projected for late 2032 — benefits don’t vanish. But they get cut. Automatically. By law. The Trustees’ own estimate: a 22% haircut. On the average retiree’s check of about $2,071 today, that’s roughly $455 gone every month. By 2032, with cost-of-living adjustments, that cut is north of $500.
